Integrated refrigerators can create some of the cleanest, most cohesive kitchen designs. Instead of interrupting a run of cabinetry with a conventional appliance, custom panels allow an integrated or panel-ready refrigerator to become part of the overall kitchen design.
For designers, however, achieving that seamless appearance requires careful planning behind the scenes.
Integrated refrigerator cabinet design involves more than creating panels that match the surrounding cabinetry. Each appliance comes with its own requirements for cavity dimensions, ventilation, panel sizes, clearances, services, and door movement. Those specifications need to be considered alongside the cabinetry surrounding the appliance, and ideally, they should be addressed during the design process rather than discovered later in production or installation.

What should designers consider when planning an integrated refrigerator?
One of the most important principles when designing cabinetry around an integrated refrigerator is that every appliance is different.
Before designing the appliance opening and custom panels, designers should review the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact refrigerator model being used.
Manufacturer documentation may specify:
- minimum cavity width, height, and depth
- ventilation requirements
- plumbing or other service locations
- minimum and maximum custom panel dimensions
- required gaps around appliance panels
- clearances necessary for doors and drawers to operate correctly
These requirements can affect much more than the refrigerator opening itself.
For example, the required depth may influence surrounding cabinetry or the depth of a wall or nib at the end of a run. Ventilation requirements can affect the construction above and below the appliance. Required reveals can determine the relationship between refrigerator panels and adjacent cabinet doors.
CABINET VISION allows designers to incorporate those requirements directly into the cabinetry design rather than treating the appliance as an isolated element.
Different integrated refrigerators require different cabinet designs
Integrated and panel-ready refrigerators aren’t all installed in the same way. Understanding how the appliance is intended to be installed is an important first step in determining how the surrounding cabinetry should be designed.
Two common configurations illustrate why flexibility in cabinet design software is important.
Integrated refrigerators installed within a cabinetry carcass
Some integrated refrigerators and freezers are designed to sit within a constructed cabinetry frame. This is common with individual refrigerator and freezer units installed side by side as a “pigeon pair.”
In this situation, the cabinetry itself becomes part of the appliance installation.
The internal opening needs to accommodate the manufacturer’s specified dimensions, while the cabinet construction needs to provide the required airflow. The front panels also need appropriate gaps between the appliance and adjacent cabinetry so they can operate without interference.
In CABINET VISION, the designer can build the appliance housing as part of the surrounding cabinetry and account for these requirements within the design. Ventilation openings can be incorporated into cabinet components, dimensions can be controlled according to the appliance specifications, and reveals can be established around the appliance panels.
The result is a design that considers both what the finished kitchen should look like and what the appliance requires to function correctly.
Integrated refrigerators installed directly into an alcove
Other integrated refrigerators don’t require a complete cabinetry carcass. Instead, the appliance sits within an open cavity or alcove, with custom doors and drawer fronts attached directly to the refrigerator.
That creates a different challenge for the designer.
You still need to represent the finished panels accurately, coordinate their dimensions and reveals, position handles, and make sure everything aligns with the cabinetry beside and above the refrigerator. But you don’t necessarily want to manufacture an entire cabinet behind those panels.
CABINET VISION provides a practical way to approach this: a cabinet can serve as the framework for designing and controlling the fronts while unnecessary cabinet components are excluded.
This allows the designer to take advantage of CABINET VISION’s cabinet-based controls for dimensions, sections, doors, drawer fronts, reveals, and hardware placement while representing only the components that actually need to be manufactured.
Coordinate refrigerator panels with the complete kitchen elevation
Technical accuracy is only part of the challenge.
Integrated and panel-ready appliances are usually chosen because the homeowner or designer wants a continuous cabinetry aesthetic. That means the refrigerator panels need to relate visually to everything around them.
Door divisions may need to align with adjacent cabinetry. Handles should sit at consistent heights. Upper cabinets may need to continue horizontal lines across the elevation. Panel gaps need to satisfy appliance requirements without appearing out of place within the overall cabinetry design.
CABINET VISION allows designers to work through these decisions while viewing the complete room and cabinetry layout.
Instead of designing an appliance opening separately and hoping everything lines up later, designers can see how the refrigerator interacts with the surrounding cabinetry as the design develops.
Account for refrigerator ventilation and services during design
One of the easiest details to overlook with integrated refrigeration is ventilation.
A beautifully aligned appliance that doesn’t have the airflow required by the manufacturer isn’t a successful design.
Depending on the appliance, air may need to enter through the toe kick, travel behind the refrigerator, and exit through an opening above. Other installations may require clearance behind cabinetry above the refrigerator.
These aren’t details that should be left entirely to the installer to resolve on site.
By modelling the relevant cabinetry components and openings in CABINET VISION, designers can account for ventilation as part of the intended construction. Notes can also be added where additional components, such as a toe-kick vent, need to be considered during production or installation.
The same principle applies to plumbing and other services. Reviewing these requirements early can reveal when additional cavity depth or changes to the surrounding construction may be needed, while there is still time to address them.
Turn appliance specifications into a buildable cabinet design
This is where specialised cabinet design software can make a meaningful difference.
The designer isn’t simply creating an attractive 3D representation of a refrigerator. The goal is to translate an appliance manufacturer’s technical requirements into cabinetry that can actually be produced and installed.
