ALPHACAM Tech Tip: Automatically Close And Finish Geometry

ALPHACAM Tech Tip: Automatically Close and Finish Geometry

Post Series: Cabinet Vision Power User

Creating clean, accurate geometry is a critical first step in efficient CNC programming. In ALPHACAM, our CAM software for CNC machines, a few built-in shortcuts can help you draw geometry faster, reduce manual cleanup, and ensure your parts are ready for toolpath creation.

This quick tech tip highlights how to automatically close and finish geometry, along with several input features that can significantly speed up everyday CAD work.

Draw Geometry Faster Using Keyboard Navigation

When drawing geometry in ALPHACAM, you can use the Tab key to move between X and Y input fields in CAD dialog boxes. ALPHACAM remembers your last known position, allowing you to define points sequentially without re-entering coordinates or restarting commands.

This approach makes it easier to build geometry efficiently while maintaining precision.

Enter Calculations Directly into CAD Dialog Boxes

ALPHACAM allows you to enter mathematical calculations directly into coordinate fields.

Simply type a calculation, press Tab, and ALPHACAM automatically evaluates the result. This is especially helpful when working from drawings, offsets, or dimensions that require quick calculations while defining geometry.

Automatically Close and Finish Geometry with F4

Once your geometry is complete, press F4.

ALPHACAM will automatically:

  • Close the geometry
  • Finish the drawing process in one step

This helps ensure all endpoints are connected and the geometry is fully enclosed, making it ready for profiling, pocketing, or other machining operations.

Verify Geometry Accuracy Using Angle Dimensions

To confirm accuracy, use CAD → Dimension → Angle to measure the angle between two lines. This allows you to quickly verify geometry created manually or imported from other sources and confirm features such as angle bisections.

Why Does This Tech Tip Matter?

These small techniques can have a big impact on daily productivity:

  • Faster geometry creation
  • Cleaner, fully closed geometry
  • Fewer errors before toolpath creation

Mastering these fundamentals helps ALPHACAM users move from CAD to CNC with confidence.
