When manufacturers first invest in a CNC machine, they often start with the CNC programming software that comes bundled with it.

For many shops, that’s enough in the beginning. It gets parts programmed, jobs completed, and production moving.

Rather than focusing on software features, our conversation centred on the operational challenges he encounters most often: shops that have outgrown entry-level CAM systems, businesses managing multiple CNC machine brands, and manufacturers looking to support increasingly complex and varied production requirements. The examples throughout this article are based on those real-world conversations.

1. "The software that came with our machine can't keep up anymore"

One example David shared involved a customer who received an entry-level software with their CNC machine. Initially, it met their needs. But as their business evolved, they wanted to do more:

The manufacturers David described were increasingly looking for software that could work across multiple CNC platforms because they wanted the freedom to make equipment decisions based on production needs, not software limitations.

During our conversation, David made an observation that neatly captures the reality of many custom manufacturers: “Every day is a new day.”

Today, the shop might be producing a boardroom table with a waterfall edge.

Tomorrow, it could be stair stringers.

The next day, custom architectural millwork.

Unlike highly repetitive manufacturing environments, these businesses can’t rely solely on fixed workflows and standard parts.

They need software that can adapt to new projects, new shapes, and new customer requirements without forcing them into a rigid process.
